Fighting isolation
نویسنده
چکیده
Cuban scientists have a tough time because of the isolation from the United States, but as Michael Gross reports, this has forced successful innovation in the biosciences with global potential amongst poorer, third world countries.

Association between fighting behavior and catecholamine biosynthetic enzyme activity in two inbred mouse sublines.
Levels of three adrenal catecholamine synthesizing enzymes and isolation-induced fighting behavior were studied in two related sublines of the Balb/c inbred mouse strain. Enzyme levels were twice as high in the adrenals of Balb/cJ mice as in those of the Balb/cN mice; heterozygous progeny were intermediate between their parents in the levels of the three enzymes. These sublines also showed mark...

MINK, J. W. AND D. B. ADAMS. Why offense is reduced when rats are tested in a strange cage. PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 26(4) 567-573, 1981 .--Tests of isolation-induced fighting and competitive fighting of rats in various conditions were used to evaluate the hypothesis that there is more offense in a familiar than in a strange cage because of the operation of an "olfactory comparator." The hypothesis was ...
متن کاملEffects of 20-day litter weight on weaned piglets’ fighting behavior after group mixing and on heart rate variability in an isolation test
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of 20-day litter weight on behavior and heart rate variability (HRV) of piglets under stress. METHODS Forty four original litters were categorized as high litter weight (HW) litters (n = 22) and low litter weight (LW) litters (n = 22) by 20-day litter weight. From each original HW litter, three males and three females were ra...
متن کاملIntrasexual competition enhances reproductive isolation between locally adapted populations
During adaptation to different habitat types, both morphological and behavioral traits can undergo divergent selection. Males often fight for status in dominance hierarchies and rank positions predict reproductive success. Ecotypes with reduced fighting abilities should have low reproductive success when migrating into habitats that harbor ecotypes with superior fighting abilities. Livebearing ...
متن کاملIsolation Associated Aggression – A Consequence of Recovery from Defeat in a Territorial Animal
Population density has profound influences on the physiology and behaviour of many animal species. Social isolation is generally reported to lead to increased aggressiveness, while grouping lowers it. We evaluated the effects of varying degrees of isolation and grouping on aggression in a territorial insect, the Mediterranean field cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus. Substantiating early observations...
